It is not easy to make music that resonates subliminally with the listener. But that is exactly what Canyons have done with their debut album, Keep Your Dreams. They have crafted an album that for the most part exists outside both genre classification and instrumental specification and instead is only really describable as an experience; one that takes place beyond the ears, somewhere inside the mind.

This is an intriguing collection of songs, each of which is more easily recalled as a cognitive process than as a musical composition. ‘Circadia’ is the perfect opening track, with an absorbing sound that rather fittingly brings to mind a new day rising.

From there, the sounds of Keep Your Dreams take you to all manner of places – underneath the saxophone riffs and the distorted vocals ‘Under a Blue Sky’ has an almost tribal sound which seems to justify the track title. Other numbers like ‘Blue Snakes’, ‘The Bridge’ and ‘See Blind Through’ continue the feeling of complete absorption. Perhaps some of the intrigue of the album is not quite knowing where it will take you next.

There are some touch points with conventionality through the vibrant ‘My Rescue’ and the equally pleasant ‘When I See You Again’, which exudes relaxation through soothing guitar progressions. The track list ambles to a close with the aptly-named ‘Land in Between’. This could well allude to a land between the conscious and the subconscious. The song takes you to a place you remember but don’t know anything about. And it is this feeling of subliminal intrigue that is oft recreated – to wondrous effect – throughout Canyons’ debut album Keep Your Dreams.
