With eight weeks until the 26th ARIA Awards, the Australian Recording Industry
Association (ARIA) today announced the nominees in all categories along with the
details of the 2012 ARIA Awards to be staged at the Sydney Entertainment
Centre, Darling Harbour on Thursday, 29 November, 2012.
 
Also announced today were the winners in three ARIA ARTISAN AWARD categories and four ARIA FINE ARTS categories - the first of many artists to be acknowledged by their peers for their creative contributions over the last 12 months.
 
This year’s nominations are an exciting mix of both new and established artists with multi-award winning, quick witted Melbourne rapper 360 leading the way with 6 nominations in total. This includes ALBUM OF THE YEAR and BEST URBAN ALBUM nods for Falling & Flying. He is also nominated in the categories of BEST AUSTRALIAN LIVE ACT, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – RELEASE and BEST MALE ARTIST. His collaboration with GOSSLING, Boys Like You, is one of ten nominees up for SONG OF THE YEAR.
 
360’s producer STYALZ FUEGO also picked up the award for PRODUCER OF THE YEAR for ‘Falling & Flying’ at the nominations event with Alex Weltinger picking up a nod for best video for Boys Like You. Debaser were recognised with a nomination for BEST COVER ART for Falling & Flying and Scott Horscroft and Phillip Threlfall in the ENGINEER OF THE YEAR category.
Following close behind with 5 nominations is GOTYE & THE JEZABELS.
 
 
GOTYE caps off another HUGE year with 5 nominations including ALBUM OF THE YEAR and BEST POP RELEASE for Making Mirrors, as well as nominations for BEST AUSTRALIAN LIVE ACT and BEST MALE ARTIST.
 
Proving that talent runs in the family, Frank De Backer picked up a gong for BEST COVER ART for his work with Wally on Making Mirrors with Francois Tetaz also collecting an award for ENGINEER OF THE YEAR for Making Mirrors.
 
After their 3 nominations last year, THE JEZABELS receive a big haul in 2012 on the back of their album Prisoner nominated for 5 ARIAs – BEST AUSTRALIAN LIVE ACT, BEST GROUP, BEST INDEPENDENT RELEASE, BEST ROCK ALBUM and the prestigious ALBUM OF THE YEAR.
 
Lachlan Mitchell has been nominated for his work on the Prisoner album in the ENGINEER OF THE YEAR and PRODUCER OF THE YEAR award categories. Christopher Doyle also received a nomination for BEST COVER ART for THE JEZABELS Prisoner artwork.
 
Following close behind with 4 nominations apiece are HILLTOP HOODS and LANIE LANE. Suffa, MC Pressure, and DJ Debris- the trio that make up the HILLTOP HOODS, are up for 4 ARIAS for BEST AUSTRALIAN LIVE ACT, BEST GROUP, BEST URBAN ALBUM (Drinking From The Sun) and SONG OF THE YEAR (I Love It featuring Sia).
 
What’s more ANIMAL LOGIC, producers of their clip for I Love It, have been nominated for BEST VIDEO.
 
Blues-jazz singer-songwriter and guitarist LANIE LANE makes an impact on the nominations this year with her debut album To The Horses up for BEST BLUES & ROOTS ALBUM, and BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST RELEASE. LANIE is also up for BEST FEMALE ARTIST and PRODUCER OF THE YEAR.
 
Director, Josh Logue is also nominated for BEST VIDEO for the LANIE LANE clip ‘Oh Well, That’s What You Get Falling In Love With A Cowboy’.
 
Following close behind, and each with a trifecta of nominations are MISSY HIGGINS, GUY SEBASTIAN, JESSICA MAUBOY, MATT CORBY, THE TEMPER TRAP, SAN CISCO and THE BAMBOOS. They are all joined by veteran Australian rock band COLD CHISEL.
 
 
Coming in at 3 nominations is previous ARIA winner MISSY HIGGINS.
Winner of seven ARIAS from a phenomenal total of 19 nominations, Aussie favourite MISSY HIGGINS may add more awards to her tally this year. Her album The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle has been nominated for ALBUM OF THE YEAR and BEST ADULT CONTEMPORARY ALBUM. She is also in the running for BEST FEMALE ARTIST – an award she has won before on two occasions.
 
Natasha Pincus, the Director of the video for Missy’s single Everyone’s Waiting has also been nominated in the BEST VIDEO category.
 
Pop-soul singer and former ARIA Award winner GUY SEBASTIAN is up for BEST MALE ARTIST and BEST POP RELEASE for his collaboration with Lupe Fiasco, on BATTLE SCARS, the track that is currently taking the United States by storm. Guy is also nominated for SONG OF THE YEAR with his single Don’t Worry Be Happy.
 
Guy is joined by JESSICA MAUBOY who continues a hugely successful year with nominations for BEST FEMALE ARTIST, BEST POP RELEASE (Gotcha) and SONG OF THE YEAR (Galaxy with Stan Walker).
 
Four piece Indie pop band SAN CISCO join Sebastian and Mauboy in the BEST POP RELEASE category for Awkward. They have also been nominated in the BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – RELEASE and BEST INDEPENDENT RELEASE categories.
 
Previous ARIA winners, THE TEMPER TRAP also receive 3 nominations for their self titled release; ALBUM OF THE YEAR, BEST GROUP and BEST ROCK ALBUM. 21 year old singer/songwriter MATT CORBY- follows up a successful year with nominations for BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST-RELEASE, BEST MALE ARTIST and SONG OF THE YEAR (Brother). Needing no introduction, COLD CHISEL have been nominated for BEST AUSTRALIAN LIVE ACT, BEST GROUP and BEST ROCK ALBUM (No Plans).

In other exciting news the first of the performance slots were also announced today with 360, Hilltop Hoods, Jessica Mauboy, The Jezabels and The Temper Trap all confirmed to hit the stage. With all acts having huge success both here and internationally, there are sure to be some incredible show stopping moments. Stay tuned as further performances are announced in weeks to come.
 
The past year has seen some impressive stats from the Australian Recording
Industry. Since last year’s ARIA Awards, there have been six Australian Singles and eight
Australian albums at #1. Australian artists have spent a combined total of 19 weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart and 16 weeks on the ARIA Album Chart.
 
There have been 83 Australian singles, albums and DVDs awarded gold, platinum or multi-platinum status and 48 individual Australian artists were accredited gold, 5 platinum or multi-platinum status.
 
This years ARIA awards are supported by Destination NSW, David Jones and PPCA and will be broadcast on Nine Network’s GO! Channel. The official ARIA Awards After party for 2012 will be held at Marquee at The Star, Sydney's new one-of-a-kind leisure and entertainment venue, located overlooking Sydney Harbour.
