Product Info
Gotye is the music-making mantle of Wally De Backer, songwriter, producer and all-round one-man band. A few years ago he created an album that became something of an underground classic. That record, Like Drawing Blood, was voted Triple J listeners' favourite album of 2006, and iTunes UK's Album Of The Year in 2008. In 2007 Gotye won the ARIA Award as Australia's Best Male. Artist and his audiovisually ambitious tour with a mini orchestra attracted huge crowds and critical raves.
'Somebody That I Used To Know' is the new single featuring vocals from lauded newcomer Kimbra. It's the second taste of Gotye's album, Making Mirrors, the highly anticipated follow-up to his platinum-selling classic, Like Drawing Blood which recently polled #11 Triple J’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums Of All Time. The mid July release of Somebody That I Used To Know (featuring Kimbra) came a few days earlier than planned owing to a leak of the video online. Within a week the song had been shared online over 50,000 times and it is currently sitting at #1 on the iTunes single chart.

When you listen to Making Mirrors, you are listening to genuine inspiration. And that is the most appealing thing about one man band Wally De Backer; his music transcends time and space itself to deliver messages of heartbreak, giddiness and everything in between.
What allows him to do this is that Wally, better known by his stage name Gotye, doesn’t adhere to just one genre, but lets his music bleed across several genres, usually during the one song. Take the breakthrough single ‘Somebody I Used To Know”, a song that has tender folk beginnings, and climaxes with a heart wrenching duet that will leave most pop stars frothing with envy.
Each track becomes a mirror for the next, as Gotye leads the listener from one emotional extreme to the other. Look at ‘Smoke and Mirrors’, a song full of echoes about the hurt that comes from being deceived, which leads into ‘I Feel Better’, a joyous track with a thumping beat that reminds you that no matter what, nothing can ever keep you down.
Unlike his previous album Like Drawing Blood, Gotye’s prolific use of samples isn’t as obvious on Making Mirrors. The samples blend together quite cohesively, giving the impression of a well practiced band, when it is simply one man, meticulously piecing together an intricate and rewarding puzzle.
The sampling of sounds is the other intriguing thing about Gotye’s music; the bass line in ‘Eyes Wide Open’ is actually Wally hitting a wire fence. This dedication to create distinguishable sounds is why this album is so inspiring; it takes the ridiculous and makes it instantly intoxicating.
Gotye catches a broad spectrum of feelings and sound, reflecting it back at us so we can see what people are made of.
And for that we should thank him.
