It’s no wonder this album is titled Watch the Throne. The success of either Jay-Z or Kanye alone should have been enough to have other big players in the rap game enviously eying a change in power, but the fact they decided to team up and lay down 12 explosively defiant tracks together shows they have no intention of abdicating as rap’s self-proclaimed kings.
Some would call it boasting, particularly when Jay-Z drops lines like “I ain’t no joke/I can’t be stopped” but with ten multi-platinum albums between them, it’s hard to argue. The thumping opening track ‘No Church in the Wild’ sets the scene for the album with a sinister portrayal of the world that makes Jay-Z and Kanye’s success all the more impressive. Tracks like ‘Murder to Excellence’, ‘Who Gon Stop Me’ and ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ show just how dark the reality of that world can be.
Above the gritty undertones there is a commanding assertion of authority as the CD builds to a powerful climax with the last track; the rousing ‘Why I Love You’ (feat. Mr Hudson). Jay-Z poses the question “What do you do when the love turns to hate?” to which Kanye responds “Gotta separate from these f***in’ fakes”. With a continual flow of similarly potent bars, Watch the Throne is certain only to entrench Jay-Z and Kanye in their roles as hip hop royalty.
