La Roux review
With dark and distorted electronic pop flooding the market, La Roux simple, inoffensive synth-pop realease is a breath of fresh air. With more emphasis on the music rather than "the look", singer Elly Jacksons' pale skin and red hair is a stark contrast to fellow pop princesses Lady Gaga and Britney Spears and La Roux’s magical feel-good melodies take you back to the 1980s, with more synthesiser lines than your favourite childhood pop group. The first commercial release, In For The Kill has taken Australia by storm, playing on high rotation in clubs and on radio stations galore - a remix by the awe-inspiring French producer Lifelike made it on to a Ministry of Sound compilation. The second single released, Bulletproof, is another synth driven track with simple lyrics and melody, that is infectious for those that like their pop-through-dance track. Elly Jackson's distinct voice smashes a killer chorus, which will be driven into your head for the rest of the day. A testament to their rarely discussed folk-ish roots, tracks such as "Cover My Eyes" also show that La Roux aren't restricted to making dance influenced pop – bringing in slow ballads, with big choral backing vocals to break up the middle of the album nicely. This is a great debut release from La Roux, who will be, without a doubt, pioneers of future pop music. Be prepared to hear this album (and sing-along vocals) being blasted out of every girls car this Summer. -Mark Olsen
La Roux
Who could hardly believe that La Roux is a duo? They're so impressive that their songs sound awesomely the same when played live, prepared with prerecorded voices, back tracks, beats and sound effects that are overlayed with the high pitched belts and melodic whine of lead singer and androynous redhead Elle Jackson. La Roux burst onto the charts with 'Bulletproof', their catchiest tune yet, accompanied by a artistic and highly stylised, geometrically colourful filmclip. These Brits have been met with awe and continued to satisfy eager listeners with their electronica-synth pop style and 80s fashion. Keep an eye out on these guys as their image is so individual it's set to make a lasting impact on the music industry.
La Roux - La Roux
UK Electro/Synth Pop duo La Roux (yes, they are a duo!) consisting of Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid have been making quite a splash around the internet with the recent release of their self-titled debut album – Complete with killer hair on the album cover! Elly’s high-pitched vocal has the potential to divide people’s opinions on the album, but pleasingly she sounds brilliant on much of the album. The standouts include the bouncy sounds of Quicksand, the mid-tempo Colourless Colour, the more calming sounds of As If By Magic, the swirling Armour Love and of course the infectious UK number one Bulletproof! I’m Not Your Toy is also worthy of a mention, even if for the quirky musical production – It’s extremely catchy! Bonus Track Growing Pains is also a more than pleasant listen, with Elly’s vocal shining over a very catchy, electronic, synthy bassline. Tracks such as the In For The Kill, Fascination and Tigerlily can be a little too much at times, and totally brilliant at others. Overall, La Roux’s debut album is quite a promising debut that is deserving of much of it’s critical praise! After hearing this, I’ll be watching this pair’s follow-up moves with much interest – Definitely worth a listen, even just to check out what all the fuss is about!.
La Roux - Self Titled
I’d say that La Roux cater to a very particular taste but it’s easy to see how popular they are just by seeing how many GetMusic fans they have. With the first track, In for the Kill, you really understand straight away what synthetic electro-pop is and what La Roux are all about. Elly Jackson really does have a sweet feminine voice but its sometimes over taken by the continual synthetics. I’d say the track Bulletproof comes through as one of the favourites for me on this album, As If By Magic which is a much smoother song and Quicksand which isn’t too fast or too slow, but like each of the others they all have the very distinctive sound of La Roux and their debut self-titled album has definitely made an impact. <3 xbeccax
Been done before.
La Roux debut is filled with electronic/synth-work with nothing that really stands out for myself. When i heard 'In For The Kill' i was excited but as the CD continues it gets dull and boring with repetitive work throughout. Although if you enjoy synth-pop and the current pop sound, you should enjoy this.
