Aussies love a cover. We’ve had successful tribute nights, the RocKwiz duets and artists that make it big with another person’s song. Triple J already know this because that’s why the Breakfast show have an act in each week for the “Like A Version” segment and they make sure they record it direct to two-track. Now that they’re up to the seventh instalment of this compilation, it’s proof that there’s more than sheer luck contributing to its overall success.

The collection includes 23 songs on CD and 15 videos on DVD. With the exception of artist Plan B, the latter is almost exclusively home-grown talent with many producing acoustic versions for their parts. The two cuts that prove the biggest surprises are Sarah Blasko and her take on OutKast’s ‘Hey Ya!’ and Seabellies with The Angels’ ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?’ They both strip the two numbers back to lilting softness, meaning the former is chilling and introspective, while the latter anthem proves a sublime break-up song, even with the audience’s typical response and colourful language found towards the end.

But it’s not all about acoustic guitars- we get a big piano ballad with ‘Evil Woman’ by Oh Mercy, some beat-boxing on Plan B’s ‘Run Away’ and even a bird call on ‘Clint Eastwood’ by The Vines. Some sisters that look like they’re from the hippie love generation, Stonefield, use the Hammond Organ to take us back to the same era that spurned Steppenwolf’s ‘Magic Carpet Ride’.

The biggest misfire of the set however, is Eskimo Joe’s cheeky version of Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’. Already messing with a bona fide classic, they get a Mac computer voice to play the Kimbra part and you get the feeling the boys are simply taking the mickey. This is not so with Children Collide and Paul Dempsey who take a leaf out of Paul Kelly’s style and approach for their contributions.

Like A Version 7 is an intriguing collection of reinterpreted hits by local and international artists. On it you might discover your new favourite song or appreciate an old one that little bit more. In all, it’s a celebration of what is good in the world of music.
